Buildings have many functions, making the ability to measure their effectiveness difficult. Building Designers face the challenge of producing a product which is not only structurally adequate for the intended site but also to produce a building which is aesthetically pleasing and practical from the perspective of its intended use.
We live on a Planet with finite resources. This is a fact which is impacting our generation more than any that went before us. The construction of buildings consumes vast amounts of resources and energy. The buildings of the future will be designed to minimize the impact on resource use while maximizing product return.
The effectiveness of a building’s design will impact the behavior of it future occupants. The ways in which people communicate, interact, move about and conduct their work or chores is directly related to the building playing host to the activity.
Buildings have a life span which is often much longer than other manufactured products. A good Building Designer will use materials and construction methods which produce a resilient building which can withstand prolonged exposure to the elements yet is sympathetic to its aesthetic and environmental requirements.
A good Building Designer can not only produce a product which is superior in aesthetic appeal, but which complements the same environment. A good Building Designer is acutely aware of the cost of construction – if a project is not economically efficient it will not be acceptable to a client for whom one of the major concerns is rightly going to be construction costs and value for money.
